Dark-shouldered Skimmer
Type locality: Bafata, Guinea-Bissau
Diagnosis
Male is similar to O. kafwi by (a) size, Hw 22-29 mm; (b) dorsum of frons unmarked; (c) thorax with broad dark mesepisternal band, becomes largely black before it pruinoses. Dorsal carina of Abd often not black; (d) Pt somewhat swollen, usually 12.5% of Hw length or more; (e) usually all (at least proximal) subcostal Ax pale; (f) 1 row in radial planate, sum of cell-doublings 0-10 [0-14]; (g) metepimeral carina not marked with black line; (h) hook of hamule short and wide, not curving over it; (i) space between hook and lobe of hamule usually narrow or closed; (j) at least S4-7 with pale longitudinal streaks, at most S9-10 all dark, although marking on S8 can be tiny. Cerci always at least partially dark. However, differs by (1) being widespread; (2) frons anterior to vertex, as well as labium, often marked with black; (3) dorsal carina of Abd often not black; (4) hamule with convex anterior border (lateral view), ending in short outward-turned hook. Habitat description
Standing and often temporary waters, seeps and springs, in open landscapes and open areas in forest. Usually with emergent vegetation and often a soft (like muddy) bottom. From 0 to 2400 m above sea level, but mostly below 1800.
